What exactly is La Station?
It’s a leisure center opened to teenagers (12 to 18 years old) and adults aged over 50. Each age group will get its own space but will be invited to share and participate in activities.
What type of activity will there be?
The activities chosen reflect the market research hired by the Verdun borough and the decisions of the organizing comity. The formal activities include languages classes, an improv group, a theatre group, microwave oven cooking classes, monthly conferences, a volunteering club, exterior sports and many other activities. Informal activities will include a homework period for teens, chichats and discoveries. Also, La Station is equipped with a pool table, a foosball table and a ping pong table, as well as a Wii console and many board and table games. Several daily activities will be organised: outings, Halloween celebrations, Holiday activities, special conferences and trainings…
What are the expected opening hours?
La Station will be opened Monday through Saturday, closed on Sundays. Expected opening hours are : Monday 1-8 PM, Tuesday 9 AM-8 PM, Wednesday 9 AM-9 PM, Thursday 11 AM-9PM, Friday 11 AM-11PM, and Saturday 1-11PM.
Do I need a membership card at La Station?
Yes. A membership card is necessary to participate in any of the activities at La Station : teenagers and adults alike. The cost is 15$ per year. This membership is more of a symbolic commitment.
Will I need to pay for anything else?
Some activities might require a participation fee. Those fees are either to pay for a specially trained teacher or necessary materials. Also, some outings and special conferences may have an entrance fee as well.
Can I rent La Station for my leisure club or a private party?
No. La Station is a club of its own and we make no disctintion between the building and its members.
Is La Station a substitute for the Centre Elgar? Are they closing it?
No. Absolutely not! The Centre Elgar remains the sole community center for Nuns’ Island. Activities and services currently offered remain at Centre Elgar!
Will there be a kitchen at La Station?
La Station has two kitchen areas (one per section). The kitchens are fully equipped except for conventional ovens. Some cooking activities will be organized.
Can I purchase a snack when I’m at La Station?
Yes. There will be snacks and beverages on site for purchase. Costs will be reasonable and vary according to sponsorships available.
Can I bring some non-member friends? How about those who aren’t teens or 50+?
Non-member friends are invited for a visit but must register as guests with the animator on site. If they choose to come back, they will need to become a member. Guests may have to pay for activities if it’s required regularly. A guest cannot participate in an activity that requires reservation. Non-teens or adults below 50 years old cannot stay at La Station, but they can surely ask to tour the premises. Some activities will involve public viewings where everyone is welcomed.
Why is Action Prévention Verdun involved with this project?
Action Prévention Verdun is contracted for the management of La Station. The City of Montreal – Borough of Verdun has chosen to delegate the management to the APV for its experience in animation and its work in the community.
Is there parking for members?
A special needs/disability parking space is available. Parking is available on Berlioz street according to street signs by the Verdun borough. La Station is also accessible by public transit.
What is La Station’s civic adress?
201 rue Berlioz, Île-des-Sœurs (Quebec) H3E 1C1. La Station is located at the intersection of Berlioz and boulevard De l’Île-des-Soeurs, where the old Esso station used to be.
Will there be a bike rack?
Yes. You can lock your bike near the house on our new bike rack.
Is La Station accessible by wheelchair?
Yes. La Station has been designed to be accessible for all and easy to get around for people with motor disabilities.
It’s so hot this summer! Will there be AC at La Station?
Yes!
What the ground decontaminated?
Yes, Esso nicely took there of that.
It looks small, will there be a basement?
No. But there is enough space for everyone. Plus, we have access to le Centre Elgar and public services.
Who owns La Station? The City?
Yes. The Verdun Borough is providing this brand new service to its citizens! A wonderful initiative providing better social cohesion, community empowerment and pride, isn’t that neat?
I would like to become volunteer, it is possible?
Yes. You just need to fill out the interests and availability document at La Station.
